The Workers of the Church

(Col1:24-29)

God is the Lord of rest (Ex33:14).
He works honorably and after He finishes work He rests.
He gives rest to those who work for Him.

While some cultures have looked down on work and working,
Others have valued it and emphasized hard work from young age, looking forward to rest in old age.

Faith is longing for God’s rest and
The life of this faith is, in order to enter His rest, toiling for the church in one’s life.

In the beginning God created all things in six days and
Finished His work and entered rest on the seventh day (Ge2:1-3).

All men became destined to toil by the sweat of their brows to gain food all their life and
Return to dust in the end (Ge3:17-19), after which
Eternal suffering in hell awaits them for
Their ancestor Adam was deceived by the devil and he sinned (Ge3:4-6).

The commandment regarding the sabbath that Israel received (Ex20:8-11) was about
Doing one’s work for six days and resting from work on the seventh day for
They were to remember that God created in six days and He rested on the seventh day.
So anyone found working on that day was put to death (Ex31:14-15, 35:2-3; Nu15:32-36).

Yet during this Era of the Law
There was a place of extraterritoriality and that was the sanctuary and
The people who were exempt were the priests (Nu28:9-10; 1Ch9:32; He10:11) for
The work of serving God is
Greater than the Law of Moses.

Yeshua said, “Destroy this temple and I will raise it again in three days,” because
Through the death and the resurrection of the temple of His body (Jn2:19-22),
He would do the Father’s work (Jn5:17-18).
For three years of His public life without resting
He healed people of various sicknesses and worked (Mt12:1-8; Jn5:8-10, 16),
For He is greater than the sabbath and greater than the temple (Mt12:6-8; Mk2:28).

Until being arrested He toiled to pray (Lk22:44) and
As He died, He said, “It is finished” (Jn19:30), declaring that He:
Finished the work of the One who sent Him (Jn10:18) and committed His spirit to the Father (Lk23:46);
Condemned the devil who left his work (Eze28; Jude1:6); and
Gave His life as a ransom for all men and worked for them (Mt20:28).

He resurrected and entered heaven,
The eternal resting place that God prepared
For the Lamb who has the marks of being slain, the most painful work (Rev5:6).

The Holy Spirit whom He sent
Comes to the souls born again through His labor pains and the church.
He lets them know that the promise of entering His eternal rest still stands (He4:1-10).

The disciples of Yeshua are those who,
Like the priests who always stood and served in the temple (He10:11),
Honorably do the work of the church, whatever that may be.
On the Lord’s Day, they serve through worship and
Put effort to gather all the more (He10:25),
Admonishing and teaching everyone (Col1:28).
They pray, do the work of evangelist and of various duties (2Ti4:5) for
On the day when they are done with all their work
They long to enter the eternal rest in the Father’s house.

O Lord,
Let us know that no one can escape
This principle of toiling and then resting!
For those who work for You and Your church will surely be fed (1Co9:7-10),
Let us not worry about what tomorrow may bring.
Instead, let us all, even as volunteers,
Become workers of the church! Amen.
